On January 22, during the press conference for the 900th episode of MBC’s entertainment program “Radio Star,” held at MBC’s new headquarters in Sangam, Mapo, Seoul, Kim Gura said: “I was surprised by the controversy over the attitude towards Goo Hye-sun’s hat. Goo Hye-sun must be angry about this.“
Since its first broadcast in 2007, “Radio Star” has been a Wednesday night staple for 19 years, producing many memorable moments and viral “memes” that have earned it a lot of love from viewers. Now in its 900th episode, the show set the record as the longest-running talk show on terrestrial TV, surprising many.
However, the show was recently embroiled in an unexpected controversy. On the January 15 broadcast, host Goo Hye-sun wore a hat despite the PD chief’s advice not to wear it, leading to criticism of her attitude. Following the incident, Goo Hye-sun responded indirectly by posting on her account: “Hats are my freedom.”
In this regard, PD Kim Myung-yeop explained: “Let’s be clear, this was not a controversy at all. One of the tasks of the PD is to monitor the appearance of the guests. That day we simply asked, “Are you okay?” Do you want to take off your hat?’ So we didn’t change it.“
PD Kim Myung-yeop continued: “She arrived early, communicated well with us during the reading, and did a great job during registration. But then there was talk of a polemical attitude. There was absolutely no problem. We didn’t talk about it to avoid making the problem bigger.”
Kim Gura also said: “In real variety shows, no one wears makeup. People wear hats and stuff. He wore the hat because there was something like that at home. I was surprised.”
He added: “Goo Hye-sun is experienced, so she can brush it off with a smile, but I think she’s angry. It’s a shame that while it did well on the show, it turned into something bad for everyone.”
