Set to premiere Feb. 7 via Coupang Play, “Newtopia” is gaining attention as a “zom-com” that offers a fresh and unique twist on traditional zombie stories.
“Newtopia” follows soldier Jae-yoon and his girlfriend Young-ju as they traverse a zombie-infested Seoul, racing through the chaos to reunite.
Director Yoon Sung-hyun, celebrated for his emotional, finely tuned storytelling in “Bleak Night” – a film that earned him accolades such as the Best Debut Director award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards – and for the thrilling genre masterpiece “Time to Hunt”, embarks on his first series project with “Newtopia”. Combining the setting of a zombie apocalypse with the love story of a blossoming soldier and his daring girlfriend, “Newtopia” injects new energy into the genre, blending romance and humor.
Director Yoon introduced the series as a work with “a different approach and tone than traditional zombie stories”. He explained: “It’s a fusion of elements that rarely mix: romance and zombies, humor and bold imagery. Each component stands alone, but when combined they create a unique energy.“
He further explained: “Although it is a dystopian setting, from the protagonists’ point of view it also presents a new and unexplored world. “Newtopia” carries a message of hope amidst adversity, which is reflected in its title.“
Park Jeong-min, who plays Jae-yoon, shared: “I always had faith in the director and there were many moments on set where I was in awe of what I saw on screen. It was a meaningful and refreshing project.” Jisoo, playing Young-ju, added: “The director had a clear vision, which gave us confidence during filming. Working with him was a joy.“
“Newtopia” will premiere on February 7.
