Squid Game 2 finale: Lee Byung-hun’s true identity and the mystery of the frontman: Gong Yoo or Oh Dal-su?

Released on Netflix on December 26, “Squid Game” Season 2 picks up with Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) returning to the game, seeking revenge. This time he will face the Frontman (Lee Byung-hun), resulting in a fierce clash and the continuation of the deadly game. The series once again became a global hit, ranking first in 92 countries soon after its release.

Season 2 shocked viewers with unexpected twists and a conclusion that defied expectations. Fans are already speculating about the possible outcome of the third season.

Lee Byung-hun, who played the Frontman in the first season, returns as a participant in the second season when Gi-hun reenters the game. The appearance of new character Oh Dal-su adds further intrigue and viewers are curious about his identity. Some fans have pointed out the connection between Oh Young-su’s character in season 1, whose name was Oh Young-il, and Lee Byung-hun’s character Oh Il-nam, suggesting possible family ties. Others speculate that Gong Yoo or Oh Dal-su could be connected to the Frontman or play a key role in the game.

In an interview with Variety on December 26, “Squid Game” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk discussed the ending of season 2, revealing that the story was originally planned to span 8-9 episodes, but ended up expanding beyond 10 episodes. Hwang explained that the season reached a natural stopping point, allowing for the transition to Season 3.

Hwang Dong-hyuk also shared insights into Gi-hun’s journey, where all his attempts to stop the game failed. His efforts to gather mercenaries, convince players to vote Leave, and incite a rebellion all end in failure, leading to a tragic loss. Hwang described this moment as a fitting end to the season, creating a heavy burden of guilt for Gi-hun as he moves forward into the third season.

While season two sets the stage for the next chapter, it also raises more questions about how the grand narrative will unfold. According to Hwang Dong-hyuk, the third season is expected to be released in the summer or autumn of next year.
