NewJeans changes Instagram bio emoji after being accused of “copying” Red Velvet

NewJeans’ Instagram bio trended on a community forum after the group was accused of “copying” third-generation girl group Red Velvet.

On December 16, netizens gathered in a discussion titled “Recap of the NewJeans and Red Velvet Color Controversy.”

Following the feud with their agency ADOR, the group decided to move forward independently by launching their own Instagram account @jeanzforfree, where members can freely post photos and content to keep fans updated.

In the post, the author uploaded a screenshot showing the account’s front page. According to the bio when NewJeans launched the account, @jeanzforfree initially had five colored emojis to represent each member.

“When NewJeans created this account, there were trolls from other groups’ fandoms (mostly ILLIT fans) saying their colors overlapped with Red Velvet’s,” OP shared.

“At first, when these trolls appeared on Instiz, Red Velvet fans said that those accounts reporting them were just small childish accounts and did not encourage trolls.”

The author further stated that the colors never overlapped with each other and that the “controversy” ended when NewJeans changed their bio emojis to their representative animals.

“When I searched, it seems like Seulgi uses both yellow and orange, so they never overlapped to begin with, and Irene uses both red and pink. NewJeans fixed this by changing their Instagram bio.”

The OP also cited an excerpt that says, “Irene is pink, Wendy is blue, Seulgi is orange, Joy is green. Yeri chose to be purple to complement Red Velvet’s symbolic colors.”
