After G-Dragon, actress Go Hyun-jung also showed her support by commenting with a candle emoji on an appeal shared by director Byun Young-joo.
On December 6, Byun posted a statement from a group of students at Ewha Womans University, saying: “Regardless of what tomorrow brings, we must stand firm and defend our dignity.The statement condemns the events of December 3, when President Yoon declared martial law and military forces blocked the National Assembly.
The students said: “For the first time, we witnessed martial law emerge from the history books. We saw soldiers’ boots at the National Assembly and guns pointed at citizens.” They appealed:”We can no longer tolerate the death of our generation. Please protect the youth, the blue spring and the Seoul spring.“
Byun, a graduate of Ewha Law School, shared the statement with her support. Notably, Go Hyun-jung left a comment symbolizing peaceful protests with a candle emoji. Byun and Go will work together in the SBS drama “The Mantis”.
Before Go, G-Dragon also expressed disapproval by liking a post from Ha Sang-wook on December 4th. The post contained a page from Ha’s poetry book that read: “Shut up and go away.” Although Ha did not add any comments, many interpreted it as a criticism of Yoon’s martial law declaration.
Several celebrities have also directly expressed their concerns. Actress Lee El shared a poetic reflection on Instagram about the ongoing protests in Gwanghwamun following the declaration of martial law. The next day, he published a student council statement condemning the illegal martial law.
Rapper E Sens expressed frustration with his SNS, “I know nothing about politics, but how can someone who declares martial law and threatens his people lead our country? If Yoon’s martial law hadn’t been lifted, we would all be censored and punished by now.”
President Yoon declared martial law on December 3 at 10:29 pm, but lifted it early on December 4 after the National Assembly unanimously passed a resolution calling for its end. However, political turmoil continues, with an impeachment motion against Yoon scheduled for a vote on December 7.
Actress Go Min-si encouraged participation in candlelight events, posting “3pm” next to a candle emoji. Organizations such as the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and civic groups have planned a large-scale protest near the National Assembly on December 7 to demand reforms and defend democracy.
In a public speech, President Yoon apologized, stating: “The declaration of martial law was born out of desperation by the nation’s leader, but I regret causing distress.” He promised responsibility and assured: “There will never be a second martial law.”
