Jeon Ji-hyun, Son Ye-jin and 2,518 others call for the removal of the Korean president

On December 7, 77 organizations and 2,518 individuals, including directors, actors and students, with notable names such as Jeon Ji-hyun, Son Ye-jin, Kang Dong-won, Moon So-ri, director Bong Joon-ho, and more, released a statement calling for the impeachment and arrest of President Yoon Suk-yeol.

The statement underlined, “To overcome the current chaotic situation and restore the weakened status of the Republic of Korea, the main condition is to stop President Yoon Suk-yeol from exercising his presidential functions. If impeachment is the fastest route, it should be pursued; otherwise, the quickest removal method must be identified.”

The group said President Yoon, along with martial law enforcement officers, must be arrested and tried immediately.

The filmmakers concluded: “For professionals in the Korean film industry, Yoon Suk-yeol is no longer a president but a criminal caught in the act. Suspend his duties, impeach him and ensure his arrest without delay.”

Previously, President Yoon Suk-yeol addressed the nation at 10 am (KST), explaining his decision to declare martial law on December 3 at 11 pm. He said the order was lifted at 1am on December 4 after the National Assembly passed a resolution to lift martial law, followed by the military’s withdrawal and an emergency cabinet meeting.

President Yoon described the declaration of martial law as a measure born “of urgency as head of state,” vowing to avoid any repetition of such actions. He further stated that future political stability, including during his term, will be entrusted to his party, with joint responsibility of both the government and the party.

Meanwhile, 190 lawmakers from the Democratic Party and five other opposition parties, along with independent lawmaker Kim Jong-min, filed an impeachment motion against President Yoon. The vote on the impeachment motion is scheduled for 5pm today, December 7th.
