Jung Yu-mi was born in Nam-gu (now Suyeong-gu), Busan, South Korea. She is the only child of a single mother family, as her parents divorced when she was in elementary school.
She is often confused with actress Jeong Yu-mi, who is a year older, has the same name and debuted around the same time. In fact, the actress also received congratulatory calls when the other Jung Yu-mi won an award at the Blue Dragon Films Awards.
