On November 26, lawyer Ahn Se-hoon discussed the issue on his YouTube channel “Good Lawyer – Men and Women Issues Research Center [Ahn Lawyer TV]” in a video titled “Why Jung Woo-sung Won’t Get Married Even Amid Heavy Criticism (feat. 13-Year Divorce Lawyer)“.
In the video, Ahn explained the reasons behind Jung Woo-sung’s stance on the “children out of wedlock” scandal.
He stated: “There’s a reason Jung Woo-sung refuses to get married, even if he faces a barrage of criticism. No matter what, he is adamant about not getting married.”
Ahn continued: “Jung Woo-sung recognizes himself as the biological father but does not want to become Moon Gabi’s husband or the baby’s official father. She has made it clear that she will not get married and only intends to cover child support and childbirth expenses. Generally, when a child is involved, most people would choose to get married. But in Jung Woo-sung’s case, marriage poses a significant risk. Is that really something to criticize him for?“
He added: “The question is whether marriage is the only way to take responsibility. Jung Woo-sung’s position is: “I will take responsibility, but that doesn’t mean I have to get married.” Of course, this contrasts with the warm and compassionate image he has displayed through his advocacy for refugee rights and human rights. His refusal to become Moon Gabi’s husband or the baby’s official father might seem cold and calculated. But from a legal perspective, Jung Woo-sung’s decision makes sense.”
Ahn then detailed the financial risks involved. “Based on a 2021 blog post estimating Jung Woo-sung’s wealth, he earns over KRW 700 million from advertising. Its total advertising earnings exceed KRW 40 billion and it owns real estate worth over KRW 20 billion. Even conservatively, his wealth is estimated at KRW 60 billion. In Korea, there is a discouraging rule regarding divorce agreements: the “5 years of efficiency, 10 years of promise” principle.“
He explained: “According to this principle, if a couple divorces after five years, 30% of the assets are divided. After 10 years it becomes 50%. If Jung Woo-sung’s wealth was KRW 60 billion, he would have to give Moon Gabi KRW 18 billion after five years and KRW 30 billion after 10 years. Even in the shortest term, the amount could reach KRW 10 billion.”
In contrast, if Jung Woo-sung only chose to pay child support, Ahn said, “In our system, child support is determined based on income brackets. The highest bracket is set for those earning over KRW 12 million monthly. For those who earn much more, for example 20 million KRW, 30 million KRW or even more than 100 million KRW, there is no higher range. No matter how high the income, child support rarely exceeds KRW 3 million per month.”
