BOYNEXTDOOR’s video at the 2024 MAMA Awards trended in a community forum, where netizens accused HYBE of heavily plagiarizing K-pop girl group tripleS LOVElution.
In a thread titled “Yet Another Thing HYBE Copied Going Viral Overseas” on November 24, netizens compared the similarities between BOYNEXTDOOR’s VCR at the 2024 MAMA Awards and tripleS LOVElution’s music video for “Girls’ ‘Capitalism.”
The author uploaded a collage comparing the two videos, specifically highlighting not only the VCR’s font design, but its concept, delivery, and context.
“The characters are already similar, but in the end so is the heart,” said the author.
OP added: “Originally, tripleS’s song was a story about a woman for women, but they changed it to a man with heterosexual love. It has become more of a hot topic overseas.”
The author also noted that HYBE had a history of criticizing tripleS in its leaked internal document, and that there were previous cases where the content of ILLIT was similar to tripleS.
Translation: “Why does ILLIT plagiarize tripleS?”
Here’s how netizens reacted to the similarities:
- “It’s too identical. At this point, I’m literally the male version of tripleS.”
- “They must have been very impressed with Mad Money Love.”
- “This ‘big agency’ bothers me so much.”
- “Using the same font is really bold. It’s like when someone copies your work but doesn’t even change your name from the document header.”
- “How can someone just bluntly copy someone’s work? I could never.”
