MAMA 2024, one of K-pop’s most anticipated events, has come under fire after accusations of bias in the awarding of the coveted prize Song of the year daesang.
This year’s ceremony featured four major awards (daesangs): Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, Fans’ Choice of the YearAND Song of the yearall distributed over the two days of the event. Among them, Song of the year was awarded at the aespa for their hit song Supernovaa viral hit that dominated the charts.
However, the decision sparked outrage among fans of other groups, leading to accusations against MAMA rather than aespa.
The turmoil began when the Song of the year nominations have been revealed, listing aespa (Supernova), BIBI (Bam Yang Band), UI (Love conquers all), YOU (Magnetic) and NewJeans (How sweet). LE SSERAFIM fans were quick to question the absence of their group’s song Perfect nightwhich was released within the eligibility period and performed exceptionally well globally.
According to MAMA’s criteria, the winner was determined by a combination of ratings (40%) and streaming/download data (60% – 40% domestic, 20% global). Many fans believed in LE SSERAFIM Perfect night he had a strong chance of being nominated and even winning based on his worldwide success.
