$70 billion Netflix blockbuster loses to ‘culinary class war’

Netflix’s “Culinary Class War” had 4.9 million views (calculated by dividing total viewing time by the show’s length) from September 23-29, ranking first in the non-English TV series category.

Since its release, “Culinary Class War” has gained considerable attention, not only in Korea but also in Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong, reaching the top 10 in 28 countries around the world.

New episodes of “Culinary Class War” are released every Tuesday and every week it consistently ranks first in popularity, proving its immense appeal. The growing interest in the chefs featured on the show has even led to large crowds flocking to their restaurants.

Meanwhile, the second season of “Gyeongseong Creature,” released on Netflix on September 27, recorded 3.1 million views, placing second. The overlap in the timing of its release with “Culinary Class War” put it in second place in the global non-English TV series category.

Despite the stellar cast, including Han So-hee and Park Seo-joon, and a large production budget of 70 billion won (about $52 million), the performance of “Gyeongseong Creature” is considered somewhat disappointing.

Meanwhile, in an interview on September 30, “Gyeongseong Creature” season 2 director Jeong Dong-yoon addressed the situation, saying, “There is no resentment towards the “Culinary Class War” because the genres are different. I enjoyed watching it too. I hope they both do well and I don’t focus too much on the rankings.”

On the other hand, “Culinary Class War” is a survival variety show depicting an intense culinary battle between skilled “underdog” chefs, known for their excellent cuisine, and Korea’s top “elite” star chefs. Featuring celebrity chefs such as Choi Hyun-seok, Choi Kang-rok, Jeong Ji-seon, Yeoh Kyung-rae, and Ahn Yu-seong, the show has gained significant attention. Culinary experts Baek Jong-won and Ahn Seong-jae appear as judges, adding a dramatic touch.

The second season of Netflix’s “Gyeongseong Creature,” starring Park Seo-joon and Han So-hee, tells the story of Chae-ok (Han So-hee) and Ho-jae (Park Seo-joon) as they fight to end to a long… a lifelong feud that stretches from Gyeongseong to Seoul, 79 years after the events of the first season.
