On the afternoon of February 3, a press projection and a conference for the new “Newtopia” coupang play series was held in Megabox Coex in Gangnam-Gu, Seoul. Director Yoon Sung-Hyun participated in the event and shared insights with the media.
“Newtopia” tells the story of the soldier Jae-Yoon (played by Park Jeong-Min) and his girl Young-Ju (played by Jisoo) while making their way through a Soul infested with zombies to gather.
This project has attracted enormous attention as it marks the second leading role for the free -renowned idol Jisoo globally. He made his actor debut in 2021 with the drama “Snowcidrop”.
In “Newtopia”, Jisoo plays Kang Young-Ju, a new employee and former “goddess of the engineering school” who is also the devoted girlfriend of Jae-Yoon.
During the press conference, director Yoon explained his decision to launch Jisoo, “I consider myself lucky to have worked with Jisoo. You may not fully grab it in the first two episodes, but by episode 8 you will see that nobody, but Jisoo could have played Young-Ju. He played the exceptionally well role. “He stressed that Young-Ju’s humor is a fundamental part, adding,”It is not a question of “trying to be fun”: humor had to come naturally by the character. And Jisoo is of course very funny. “
He further expressed his gratitude, “During the production, I continued to think: “It is such a relief that we are working together”. I was incredibly lucky and it also helped me a lot on a personal level. “
However, Jisoo had previously dealt with recitative criticisms when “Bucaneve” aired. Aware of these concerns, director Yoon recognized them from front. He reassured, “From “Snowdrop”, Jisoo was not active in acting for a long time. At the beginning I wondered: “Will it be fine?” But he dedicated himself to the script readings four days a week, making an incessant effort. Seeing his dedication, I had no doubts or worries. “
The director Yoon also praised Jisoo’s attitude on the set, “Even during filming, he always smiled. This was an incredibly demanding shot with intense scenes. Many of the action sequences have been particularly difficult for a female protagonist, but has faced them effortlessly, always maintaining a positive attitude. I am really grateful.“
Supporting the evolution of the character of Jisoo, he said, “Young-Ju undergoes a dramatic transformation, pushing beyond the imaginable limits. There are many fundamental scenes, one of which requires a chainsaw and fights the zombies. These moments are represented fresh and exciting.“
The first two episodes of “Newtopia” will be broadcast exclusively on Coupang Play at 20:00 on February 7th.
