A “prize” that is better not won.
Like the American “Golden Raspberry Awards” to honor the “worse” in contemporary cinema, the “Sanddalki (Raspberry) Awards” is a tradition that has continued since 2017, organized by South Korean media Sports Khan.
In 2024, for the 8th Sanddalki Awards, Sports Khan conducted its annual survey 51 cinema and/or entertainment journalists from the main national media. While 2024 it was full of unprecedented chaos, actors Jung Woo Sung, Youn Yuh JungAND Jeon Do Yeon particularly stood out for these professionals as the worst behaved.
As Sports Khan expected, Jung Woo Sung received 22 votes and was named the least mannered actor of 2024. Voting journalists highlighted his actions involving the model Luna Gabi and extramarital child, as well as his flirtatious DMs with non-famous women. Noting the negative impact he had on the Korean film industry, journalists blamed his multiple scandals as rude to himself, his fans, and his career.
Journalists’ comments included:
- “I will always remember how he won the Blue Dragon Awards and gave the whole thing a funereal feel.”
- “I didn’t know he would use his good looks like this. Taking responsibility for his son is his duty, but how will he rebuild the reputation he destroyed in just three days?
- “It’s a shame, especially when Korean cinema is already struggling, that public sentiment towards filmmakers is cooling.”
- “12.12: The Day it’s one of my favorite movies ever, but it ruined it. No more concern for me!”
18 votes went to Oscar-winning actress Youn Yuh Jung. According to voting journalists, Youn’s attitude in press interviews, especially those promoting his K-Movie Dog daysera “rude.”
At one point, Youn blamed journalists for the deceased’s death Lee Sun Kyun. Although his sadness was understandable, journalists who participated in the interview were stunned by his unfounded accusations. Furthermore, there were numerous complaints that Youn Yuh Jung smoked during interviews and spoke informally, which belittled journalists.
Journalists’ comments included:
- “What kind of logic is it to say that journalists killed Lee Sun Kyun?”
- “No matter how good an actress is, she should watch her words in an interview.”
- “Ma’am, there’s a fine line between honesty and rudeness.”
- “Please show respect and manners befitting your global fame.”
- “If he gets angry at every question, how are we supposed to do our jobs?”
- “Why does he always ask every reporter their age?”
Actress Jeon Do Yeon came third with 4 votes. In August 2024, the actress was criticized for her behavior towards comedian Yoo Jae Suk at a press conference for his K-Movie, Revolvers.
“Extra Rude” actress’s explanation for her behavior towards Yoo Jae Suk leaves more cold
Journalists commented:
- “She’s so stubborn that she can’t take a joke as a joke. Instead, he had to make the situation awkward for everyone.
- “So he wanted to use Yoo Jae Suk and his show for publicity, but he couldn’t stand his jokes.”
Other names mentioned include the late Lee Sun Kyun (for his multiple scandals leading to his death), Kwak Do won (for jeopardizing the release of a film while intoxicated) e Gong Yoo (for his past comments about the dictator Chung Hee Park resurfaced amid South Korea’s recent political turmoil).
